And when I was in High School (long long ago!) I got a rather nice Sousaphone (maybe a Buescher - it was a LONG time ago) that sounded stuffy as can be. So I tried the garden hose trick and eventually managed to flush out a whole box of Tampax. After that, everything sounded fine.
Amazing what people will toss at the bells when you're doing parades. I've even known firecrackers to go off inside (fortunately) someone else's horn.
I almost think a net over the bell is a necessary bit of self defense.
