I am reminded of Mr. Miyagi's query to Daniel Loruso: "You learn dixieland from BOOK?"
No. Learning jazz is like learning karate or learning to drive. There are thousands of good-quality CD recordings out there. Play along with them! Once in a while you will stumble on an odd chord that is hard to hear on the recording; that's when you go to the book. (But don't expect it to be right!) Here's another clue: you don't really know a tune until you can play it fluently in every key, lead, harmony, and bass line.
