I think any BBb can be a pro-level instrument in the hands of a professional. Instruments that I would keep an eye out for would include pretty much anything by Meinl Weston, Rudy Mienl, or B&S. If you want a more 'American' sound used Marzan BBbs always get rave reviews and for good reason. Many new and used Kings, Conns, and Yorks can be quite good as well. If you have plenty of cash on hand Hisbrunners are always a safe bet. I'm sorry I can't be more specific but you really need to go out and play lots of horns, listen to lots of great players perform, and ask your teacher to help you define what it is that you are looking for in an instrument.

An instrument that doesn't get talked up much on this board is the B&S BBb. Marcus Hoetzel has a cd out titled Variations. The first and last track make heavy use of a model 3103(is this the PT-1?) and is a real inspiration in my opinion.

good luck,
joseph
