Klaus, if you have not tried nail polish, don't be so against it....it has worked extremely well for a friend of mine who is allergic to her mouthpiece. It does not dry up and flake off, and it has a very smooth feel, between silver and gold. It is also cheap, easy to try, and easy to remove.

I agree with checking/changing the leadpipe angle so that the water runs into the horn; I would get chapped too if I had water running down my chin all the time. If that is not a possiblity, then blotting his chin rather than wiping it would be a better solution, again as suggested with a non-scented soft cloth (piece of white T shirt?) or kleenex.
