"Dirty spit" is a possibility. Good hygiene, or just a good mouth-rinsing, could help prevent extra gunk (keep in mind that I'm not implying anything about your husband! :) ). The slightly different chemical nature of different people can have small but cumulative effects, too. And, different metals corrode at different rates.
If your two horns are made of the same alloys, and hygiene habits are the same, there's something else going on. That might make for an interesting scientific study... or not. :)
