I had the chance to visit with Dave Bargeron as he came through town for the North Sea Jazz festival (playing with the Gil Evans band). Dave was kind enough to lay a rough mix of his new jazz tuba CD on me! It's in collaboration with French jazz tubist Michel Godard. The rhythym section consists of a very hip accordionist(!) who can actually handle changes, and a drummer. The two tubists take turns serving the bass role. There's lots of incredible stuff on it: Dave does Giant Steps, using multiphonics, and at a blazing tempo! Also Dave's version of Indiana / Donna Lee, and various original tunes as well.
This will be released on the Enja label in September. Enja's a large company, so it shouldn't be a problem finding a copy. This CD will raise jazz tuba playing to a whole 'nother level!
