I can tell you that the ride is somewhat quieter with soldered spokes and feels a bit firmer. Your difference of opinion may be in that you're into those little 28-spoke competition wheels. I build 48-spoke cross-4 tandem wheels that really take a beating and soldering certainly seems to help. The only time I've ever had a spoke break is when a hub broke and the wheel disintegrated.
