Only a little off the wall, but I think beneficial. It only stands to reason if wooden instruments sound better if played on a regular basis, that some extra vibration, especially in the low register would help "play in " a new bass. Fender guitars has a process that they do on their "Relic" line that involves strapping the instrument onto a vibrating table tuned to a particular frequency to assimilate years of playing in order to get that "played in" effect. I think it works pretty well because I've played some of the basses done that way, and they're much better than the standard line IMHO.

I've got an order in with Kolstein in NY for a new bass, and I plan on getting some help in the break-in period with this method. Of course, the fact that the bass was rough-carved 30 years ago will help, too. Of course the best option, as always, is just to practise the thing as much as possible.
