Also, silver preserves the horn much better than lacquer or raw brass. Raw brass will pit, lacquer will chip or wear then pit. Silver, will last much, much longer. And even if it does tarnish, the brass still is not effected.
Gold plating does not tarnish, pit, or wear. But who can afford to gold plate a tuba?!? (besides Yamaha for the Canadian Brass)
