I assume you are speaking about marches that were converted to be played by an orchestra. I happen to think that "marches" or "orchestral marches" are cool sometimes, of course it depends on the piece, orchestra, and conductor. I will submit that Tchaikovsky's Marche Slav is a wonderful march when played by an orchestra, but many (or even most etc..) or the band arrangments suck.
