I think you may be limiting yourself to just the performance angle. There are many many careers in music ranging from retailers, repair, publishing, teaching, performing, and technical jobs. The reality is that very few professional musicians make their living doing just one. To me that is the fun of it. One day I am arranging music for a marching band, the next I am playing in an auditorium or club or teaching in a classroom. If you love music, you can find a rewarding career. I love to play but I don't envy the lifestyle of the professional orchestral player. I guess I'm ADD or something.
