For all who are curious, what Joe is talking about started out as what Schilke calls a Butler/Geyer conversion they do to their P5-4 piccolo. It's a third slide ring and a first thumb hook. Butler and Geyer are a husband and wife team of trumpet players that formerly taught at Eastman and now teach at Nouthwestern.
Trumpet players, go figure!
