Wagner was complex to say the least, but like many anti-semites, or racists of whatever "anti" they may be, he hated the abstracted ones he didn't know. It is fascinating that for his most spiritual and Christian opera, and his final work, he entrusted the premiere performances to the conducter Hermann Levi.
