For an interesting take on this, the current IEEE (July 2002) Computer mag has an interesting article, "What Technology is Doing to Music" by Bob Colwell about engineers, technology and music.
Another interesting article in the same publication is "Seven Great Blunders of the Computing World" by Neville Holmes. I wonder what the seven great blunders of tuba design are?
