I have used the Hickman book and I highly recommend it. I used to sing and play the exercises frequently. Basically, if you can read these exercises then you can sight read almost anything. For those who haven't seen the book and unfortunately mine was destroyed years ago, you basically read the rhythms by the distance between the notes. The notes are all closed (meaning no open circles for half and whole notes) with no stems or flags. They are progressive. It was a great help when I auditioned won a good playing job years back and had to sight read for 1/2 hour in the finals. I have used for this concept in my own private teaching for years.

Obviously, reading as many excerpts, etudes and other material will help as well. But the Hickman book is a great asset. Good luck in your pursuits.

Mark
