Sorry, I didn't mean to question to abilities just wanted to offer some suggestions as a trombone player. If you really think the problem is
the slide there are still a couple of other possibilities besides the plating being worn on the inner slide tubes. Is the lead pipe soldered in or does
it come out?
I've seen lead pipes pulled out of old horns that can have holes in them or jagged edges from deterioration. That could be cheaper then replacing the tubes. Also there could be a small leak around the spit valve. Either of those possibilities can make a horn play badly.
Can you borrow a similar slide and try it with that bell. If it improves try swapping the inner and outer slides. It may help you isolate where the problem is. If the inner slide tubes are the problem then I don't think there is a Quick and Cheap alternative.
