I don't think the plating removal would make any difference in sound. It can be removed by simply having a repair shop buff it off. The job would probably be easy, since you are stating that it is thin enough to be wearing off quickly anyway.
As to "why"...
- It may have been plated thin ("standard" is about .0004").
- Is someone polishing it a lot?
