Not renting tubas is the norm with music stores, though a very few might do this on a very limited basis.

You do have a reasonable option these days. Quite a few dealers (as I have) are discovering the low pricing and good playability of the 4V 3/4-size and (for a few more $$$) 4V 4/4-size Weril tubas. These are certainly not the "world's finest" tubas, but they're quite playable, sturdy, and dern good for "rent"ing.

If you hook up with a store that sells these at good discount prices, you can "rent" (not really rent, but read on...) such a BRAND NEW tuba for roughly $160/mo...$5+/day (???) for a year and *OWN it after you're through renting it.

*What I'm really referring to is simply BUYING a brand-new one using a competitive-rate credit card and paying it off with 12 equal payments in a year.
