Oh, did I like this posting!

I have had an experience with one of the "Tuba players". I considered him an extremely qualified instructor, but I hated his gross over-blowing, when he soloed himself.

I also have met Steven Mead personally in a very close social setting. I liked his euph playing. But what carried me away with admiration, was his musicianship. Basically SM is a highly qualified singer, who has chosen to sing through a euphonium. That he and I have very contrasting ideas on euph design and choice of mouthpiece, does not detract an iota from my admiration for him.

Even if it was a stunt of no great musical consequence, I would want for all of you to have heard SM play a boogie bass line on his euph and simultaneously to sing an improvised melody line over the chord progression. Sounded like ****, but very musically and expressively. And actually it was perfectly in tune.
