Yes, there seem to be differences in the sound of the same instrument in piston & rotary, and while both may be good, they are often different. It becomes the buyer's preference. However, there is another consideration: My observation is that rotary valves are a lot tougher and more reliable than pistons (some people may disagree with this, but it is my observation). I have played many of both, and the rotaries (sp?) seem to play, and play, and play, while tubist are always messing with pistons to coax them to keep going up and down. Of course, this is not valid if the horn is physically damaged (dropped, etc.). Both are equally bad in that case.

Your mileage may vary, but that is my observation.
