Not true!
The difference is the progression of the leadpipe bore. The 981 has a very fast progression. The 982 progresses over its full length.
The 981 is a musical instrument. The 982 is something made to scare Her Majesty's horses.
Actually one of the larger London brass houses often adds carrying rings to the 981's. Even among marching people, there are some, that have musician's ears.
