I do not know if ultimately a person with thick lips or thin can play better than the other, and of course we mean playing the tuba. However, I have read that the mouthpiece should be matched to the thinness or thickness of the lips. One manufacturer recommends a thin rim, shallow funnel cup to trumpet players with thin lips.

would be interested in asking others with thin lips what types of rims and sizes and shapes of cups they use.

As always, the level of ability is a factor in the limitation, if any, imposed by the thinness of lips. (I also remember in one method book the author mentioned the issue of the width of the lips in relation to the inner diameter of the mouthpiece, saying that people with thins lips, especially those with thin lips in relation to the length, are better off not to choose a diameter too big (even though a wider one would add more richness of sound since more lip would vibrate).

What choices of mouthpieces do people with thin lips make?
Thanks,
Bill
