Clyde, one thing with the fifth valve is that it's like the second rotary on a bass trombone. So you don't have to pull your fourth valve slide too far in order to hit the lower notes. Another thing with the 5th valve is that if you don't want to learn CC tuba fingerings, but want that clearity, you just have the 5th valve slide down and you can play with BBb fingeres. Of course, if you have a 2 step 5th valve, you will get an AAb tuba and that's got a nice dark and rich tone.
