I agree that Eb is a great key for the cimbasso. I most recently tried a CC which seemed unwieldy in response and too heavy in sound quality. All that length of tubing and weight of the bell held by a thin connection to the body was very physically unstable. There were the chronic F tuba low register response problems with the F cimbasso that I tried. I built a cobbled together Eb that has its own set of problems but is more nimble and the sound fits together with the tromboni better.
What key were most of the original period cimbassi?
