Not to pre-empt Mike's answer, but cimbassos have been seen in bend valve trombone and tuba shape (rotary and piston) versions from Italy. As vertical bass trombone with circular bell from Vienna. As straight and bend rotary trombones plus as a huge rotary bass trumpet from Bavaria/Bohemia.
The term is vague!
