I use the shelf liner. Last roll I got was from Target and I think it was about $3. There are two styles that I've seen: one has kind of random size nubs (that's a technical term :)) and looks kind of rough; the other has regularly sized nubs and holes and looks kind of smooth. The second kind has worked best for me. With either one, the piece you use will lose it's tackyness over time (a couple of months, in my case) so don't throw the roll away. Tuck it in your case or gig bag so it's there when you need it. Another thing I've heard, but not seen or done, is to fasten a piece around the side of the bottom bow where it rests on your leg.
As with anything like this, YMMV.
