For many years I used two of those black rubber drum pads. I cut the thick part out of the middle and glued them together. I have since purchased a Stewart Stand and wish I had done that years earlier. I highly recommend one. In fact I've had mine permanently mounted to my horn. No more ugly velcro straps. They should be standard issue on all horns just like a peg on the bottom of a cello or string bass. If you would like to see a picture of the stand on my horn email me and I will send you one.
