Personally, I've never believed in the extra metal "extra resonance, tone, etc..." sales pitch, but I play on an PT-88+ (mega)and the only reason I do is because I played it back to back with my regular PT-88 for many members in my studio at school and it was unanimous which one the masses liked (even with all the switching around)....I've played the PT-50+ and its in the same boat. I'd definitely try it out and play it for your teacher at home, etc. Good luck.
