"They rush from work to the soccer field to see Johnny score his first goal, and then the next night they rush to the gym to see little Janey try for a 7.5 on the floor exercise. As soon as they get done at the gym, they have to run and pick up another kid at the ice rink after skating lessons or hockey practice. Now we're up to Wednesday, when two of the three kids have music lessons. "

I've lost more students because of choices in extra-curricular time to sports because of the time demands of those activities after school. These are our future audience members, folks. These people, by in large, aren't going to be professional players or teachers. Much of the audience we cultivate for any kind of listenable music is there because they know something about what they are hearing and they're not going to learn it in school as a normal part of their curriculum with all the cut backs going on. Yet, whenever someone such as the Canadian Brass comes to play with the symphony here, it sells out. It's a great group, but still fairly music for the masses.
