A little on this subject:

Make your own gigs.

The world has NO idea what the tuba is capable of -- that is why we are always in submissive, supportive, or even comedic roles in the BACK of ensembles (nothing wrong with that, it can be wonderfully rewarding -- but there is only so much of that to go around...)

Be creative and expressive and persistent (that is what music is about anyway right??)

We are presented with this wonderful clean slate -- due to the infancy of our instrument... Onlookers (on-listeners?) approach with such curiosity and fascination!!

Yes, you will have to be more creative than an average piano player or geetar player, BUT that is an OPPORTUNITY, not a detriment.

Take the approach of Jaco Pastorius or Edgar Meyer -- both incredibly successfully transformed what their instruments are capable of and brought them forward -- OUT of the similar traditional supportive roles. The same could even be said of Jacobs or Bell -- now it is our turn.

:)

peace
