Thanks for all the tips. I had no intention of trying to carry it on, which is why I bought the flight case. I will stuff every nook and cranny with bubble wrap, make sure it is basically immobile in there. I don't think I have time to get insurance before next Saturday, except maybe a rider on my house insurance. The porter is a good idea, as well as asking to be present for scanning so I can unlock it if need be, and to tape the locks down. Great advice, all of it, thanks!! I'll be carrying on my violin and checking the tuba...a one woman band! My only anxiety is that on a leg of the flight they will have some puddle jumper and not want me to carry on the violin...and then I'll have to take a bus or something, because my 1903 Italian violin is not going in baggage, period.
