This is the unpopular view around here, but I use Lip Medix (Blistex) which has camphor. This clears up the problem quickly and sooths the pain right away. Yes, it is possible to get an addiction to it but if you decide that you will only use it when your lips are chapped, then it is not a problem. I never use it before I am going to play. And during the winter when I use it the most, I wipe it off before I play. It has never affected my tuba playing that I know of.
