1. A good conductor has two necessary qualities: A sound in his head and the skill to get we musicians to produce that sound. Many conductors have one or the other, but the great conductors have both. The skill to get us to produce the sound requires the ability to tell us about that sound in his head, and the ability to direct our small choices so that they combine to produce that sound. The good conductor has a direction in mind, an ability to point the way, and the ability to lead us there. More importantly, a good conductor is a good salesman for that sound, and knows how to inspire the musicins to adopt that sound as their personal objective.

2. A good rehearsal is when the musicians leave it satisfied that they made sufficient progress towards achieving that sound.
