When I prepare a solo, part of my preparation is listening to recordings of it. Part of listening to it responsibly is to use it as guidance, not as dictation.

My goal is that the conductor walk into the room with a musical concept of the work worked out beforehand, and if he can do that better without recordings, that's fine with me. But I'm no perfectionist: If a conductor borrows his concept from another (great) conductor, that's okay with me. I'll take that over a lack of concept at all.
