A good friend of mine has filed-to-shape and soldered a 'Screw-Rim' Trumpet mouthpiece to the base of his tuba creating a similar product.

He has the luxury of working in a music shop and has cut 3 or so shanks to differing lengths to suit most situations. The end of the shanks have a rounded piece soldered on also to prevent the 'spike-effect' : ) In addition, he can unscrew the shank altogether leaving only the insignificant rim left.

I like these systems as they remove any weight from your legs and tend to allow you to sit as you wish in the chair (which most stands do not). I'm unsure how stable these supports would be when used with the largest/heaviest horns - any ideas??
