Don't know about their tubas, but you are right about the reputation of their trumpets. In 1954, I attended a concert in Los Angeles' Shrine Auditorium featuring the touring Boston Symphony. Near the box office was this handsome young trumpet player in tux flirting with young ladies. He was holding his silver plated C trumpet, a gorgeous horn. I asked him the make and he said it was a Courtois. The whole trumpet section played Courtois in those days. Probably because of Roger Voisin and/or Charles Munch. The first half of the concert was, you guessed it, all French.
