I'm going out on a limb here for me, but....I think a lot of it has to do with personal preference. I like a sound that is more "tuba like" than "euphonium like". On the recordings I have for example, I prefer Floyd Cooley's tuba sound on his "Romantic Tuba" over Roger Bobo's tuba sound on "Botuba" when they are playing F tubas. Sometimes it seems, at least to me, as if Bobo is playing a euphonium until the music takes him into the lower registers. Similarly, I prefer the sound of John Fletcher on the Vaughn Williams Concerto over Arnold Jacobs. Keep in mind that Arnold Jacobs' tone color is probably closer to the composer's original intent than Fletcher's, since I believe it was written for a small bore F bass tuba. Nevertheless, I prefer the darker and fuller sound that Fletcher has. Maybe it's because I was raised on large BBb tubas. Who knows? In topics such as this, it's all relative. In my REALLY humble opinion.
