I think finding your sound is a trial and error thing when you practice. It involves recording yourself in all registers and doing all types of playing. I also think that to find a sound you like you need to study and listen to different tubists playing their F to get an idea on a different colors the horn can make.
My other comment about the F horn is that I think many people focus on the F horn as purely a high horn, one shouldn't forget the low register of the horn. Somewhere along the line golf was introduced as an anology, " Don't handicap yourself by not learning the full range of the instrument."
