I am certainly no expert, but I agree with Mark about compensating tubas being somewhat stuffy. I would encourage you to go to a reputable tuba store, if possible and let your son try out a few tubas before buying.

I have purchased a number of tubas off of eBay and it's a gamble. Sometimes you get a good deal, sometimes you don't. Under very few circumstances do you get an opportunity to make a decision after inspecting the horn. Many of the professional dealers will allow you to buy a tuba and if it is not satisfactory, return it.
