I studied with Mr. T and asked him about the Gould sessions. He said that Mr. Gould called him on the phone at Michagan one day and they discussed the possiblity of recording the Hindemith. At that time, Mr. Gould was president of the Hindemith Society (or something like that) and wanted to release some "accurate" recordings of Hindemith's sonatas.

Mr. Gould sang through the entire to Mr. T on the phone and explained why all the tempos were slightly different. The main difference is the second movement, of which Mr. Gould described the error as misprint. He said that the movement was meant to be somewhat comical and that the faster tempo lended to this idea, but made the piece quite difficult for even the most accomplished pianist. Hence, the slower tempo that Mr. T said he actually prefered after getting used to it. I believe that it lets the piece groove a bit more.

The other marking are merely exact and literal performances of the marking indicated on the page. By doing some basi math, you get some very different tempi than what people have traditionally done.
