I just had an education on mouthpieces, uh, er, bells.

For about as long as I've been playing the horn, I have tried mpc after mpc trying to "fix" my sound, which was on the tinny side.

Then, last week, I playtested a Lawson bell on my Schmid horn. The Lawson bell was of similar metal but of considerably more mass than the bell I was using.

Bingo!! an ENORMOUS increase in sound quality, with the same darn mouthpiece.
In addition, the notes slot MUCH better, and the low range just pops out now in amazing fashion.

Lesson learned. The bell makes a whopper of a difference, at least on a french horn. I purchased the bell.
