Daniel's advice is excellent. When I was in college and the first chair in my college band (second chair overall), I had the choice of playing top or bottom parts. I chose to play the lower parts in order to build up my low register and get coordination for fouth and fifth valve combinations. I also found that after firming up my lower register, the top end of my range came more easily. The advice that I often give to young tubists is to build the lower register before building the upper register, let the trumpet players blow out their lips on high A's and C's. The best way to master the lower end of the horn is to just start playing the parts. Once some mastery is acheived here, the rest of the range will come more easily. And stay away from pea-shooter mouthpieces!!!
