Hi, that was a common design of horns earlier in the centruy and some less expensive horns nowadays still use that design. Many of the old horns I've played with the tuning slide in the lead pipe had very out of tune overtone series. especially old baritone horns. Perhaps that is why they do not use that design much anymore. Some of them had very flat low Bb (Low Eb on the Eb tuba) and flat high D (G on the Eb tuba). I am sure there would be other factors effecting the tuning, but this would definitely be one of them. Ply the horn first to be sure. check it on a tuner if possible. ken k
