Don Harry (Buffalo Philharmonic, Indiana graduate [under William Bell], and all-around great guy and player) teaches at Eastman, and they do rotation there for the orchestra and band positions. They have a freshman-sophomore orchestra, a freshman-sophomore band, an upper-classmen orchestra, an upper-classmen band (Eastman Wind Ensemble), and a graduate orchestra. The wind players rotate in and out of their level of band and orchestra (two or three concerts by each ensemble each semester, you might only play on certain pieces or hold different chairs for different pieces), and the studio teachers do not overload their studios with students there. Each student gets to do some significant playing each semester. Good luck getting in to schools of this caliber, though, and good luck financing the tuition. Most conservatories and top caliber university schools of music are in the mid to upper twenties, per year, in tuition, plus misc. expenses.

If you get into a school of this caliber(like the ones listed in the post, above), you are more seriously considered for selection for summer music festivals, etc. it seems, and maybe eventually for a J-O-B.
