These are all good points about the Yamaha line of tubas. I think Maria hit it exactly when she said that her opinion of the Yamaha sound was that it was clearer and tended to be more bright. Considering the most popular models Yamaha currently sells, I think her assessment may be very accurate. Isn't their most popular tuba their F? Also popular is the CC horn that Charles Daellenbach helped develop for his use in the quintet. I also don't think it is a coincidence that 3 names to come up in this conversation (Jim Self, Roger Bobo, and Charles Daellenbach) are all playing Yamaha tubas in situations where clarity is a real priority. In that regard, Yamaha tubas may be very good for studio, solo, and quintet work. I know many professional players who are using their F tubas. Who knows, with more european conductors and the mounting trend for smaller equipment in auditions, maybe Yamaha will make a splash...
