Are you trying to play it with "concert" pitch in mind, or the bugle "C" overtone series in mind? Even though the instrument is pitched in G, the low G is called a C. All the bugle family is like this, presumably for ease of use for trumpet/horn/TCeuphonium players. Also, for C tuba players the system fits _almost_ well when the music is written in bass clef.
