Being military musician also, I have found that it helps quite a bit to not have just one source of income. My wife and I decided to do some investing a few years ago and fortunately it was a good move for us. Now we don't have to depend on the monthly paychecks. Now with the financial responsibility burden sort of lifted, I would say it's a lot easier to focus on what I like to do. So do I still enjoy playing for $$$? Yes, it's a lot better than playing for free. ;) My .02
