I recently had a case built for my son to travel with his mirafone. Upon his departure I watched as the horn was loaded onto the plane (hard to miss something as large as a tuba flight case!), and I am sure that severe damage was avoided due to the protection afforded by the new case. While Joe's method sounds great, especially when money is a concern, I went a different (and much more expensive) route. The case was built to accomodate the horn inside the gig bag (with room for a mute, and maybe a small car!). If you are unable to shell out big bucks, check out Joe's idea. But certainly, consider the cost of some MAJOR repairs if you decide to take the risk!
