I'm just a sophomore in High School, so I don't know much, but I'll put in my 2 cents worth:
My band director is very insistant about collecting ALL music at the end of the year. So that leaves me at home over the summer with one etude book, christmas solos for Tuba by the Canadian brass, and a few scale sheets I printed up on my computer before the program screwed up. So I have found that the best thing for me to do every day over the summer is to first do some warm ups by trying to figure out how many notes i can hit with one fingering. This has REALLY helped my range. Then I practice my chromatic scale to see how fast yet accurate I can do it. Then I practice the scales required for district band auditions. I found an old church Hymnal so I sightread out of it every day too. I am amazed at how much this helps my playing ability, and I usually manage to do this in under an hour every day, and sometimes have done it in 20 minutes (when I was REALLY busy)
I don't know if this will help, but who knows......
