I owned a raw brass tuba for 5 years. You can keep it polished or let it tarnish just like you can with a silver plate. The only worry is wearing through the brass with the oils from your skin. The place where my right hand sat on the bottom end of the bell pitted a little bit. This was an old horn, and it wasn't even close to wearing through, but you could tell it was wearing by touch.

You can prevent the wear by keeping that part polished - brasso does wonders, and I've even heard of using auto wax after buffing it out (ask a repairman, i'm not really sure) - or you could create some kind of pad. Be careful with making pads though - some materials soak up the oils from your skin then hold them against the brass, making the wear even worse.
